Consider the following 2 economies, Home and Foreign, endowed with different

quantities of two goods, Apples and Blackberries. The respective demands in the two countries are

characterized by the following preferences. Consumers at Home have preferences representable by

the following utility function: U(xA,xB)=xA1/2 xB1/2, while consumers in Foreign have preferences

representable by the following utility function: U*(x*A,x*B)=x*A1/3 x*B2/3. Trade is the only

“production technology” available to the two countries, which have the following fruit endowments:

Home has 100 Apples and 70 Blackberries, while Foreign has 50 Apples and 80 Blackberries.

Assume countries are in autarky.

1. Homothetic preferences are characterized by the fact that marginal rate of substitution (MRS) is

constant along any ray from the origin, i.e. consumers always prefer to consume the two goods in

the same ratio. Show that both countries’ utility functions represent homothetic preferences. Why

do you think this type of preferences is appealing in international trade models?

2. Draw a graph representing Home country’s autarkic equilibrium, and one representing Foreign’s

2 autarkic equilibrium. Explain how this equilibrium is determined.

3. Compare autarky prices in the two countries and explain what are the factors that determine

them. Why is autarkic p in this particular relationship with autarkic p*, given the above

assumptions? Assume countries open up to trade with each other.

4. Calculate the demand for the two goods for both countries and the equilibrium relative price pw at

which the two countries trade Apples for Blackberries.

5. What is the trade pattern between the two countries? Explain the pattern of trade by looking at

the initial endowments and tastes?

6. Imagine there are 2 groups in each of the two countries: Apple-owners and Blackberry-owners.

Show that if when income redistribution is not possible, one interest group is hurt due to trade.

Hello, I am looking for someone to write an essay on Factors of Childhood Obesity. It needs to be at least 2000 words.

This essay “Factors of Childhood Obesity” outlines the role of television, genetic and physical activity in this medical and health condition. Obesity is a pathological condition which has now become a matter of global concern. It is a disease associated with the excessive accumulation of fats in the body of individual. Obesity is a condition which can be the base for many degenerative diseases affecting major bodily systems and an interesting aspect is that it can also affect the psychological condition of a person. The epidemic has resulted in increased number of health issues taking place in America including cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, arthritis, and hypertension. Currently many schools have imposed state programs which help children to increase physical activity and have a balanced diet as per the requirements of their body. The calories that they intake are usually burnt with the help of physical activity and if this is not done then the BMI of that individual would increase resulting in obesity. Identifying that we are aware of what this assumption means and providing evidence that we are actually able to take charge of our evolution and not resigned to accepting an obese fate. This research paper will help in providing a better understanding of the factors that lead to childhood obesity. In particular, the research paper concludes that unhealthy food consumption and sedentary lifestyle, two major contributory factors in childhood obesity, can be countered at an early stage with better, healthier food and more physical activities.

About Obesity Obesity is a disease state which was initially considered to have no genetic role in its causation. But recent research has put forward the fact that obesity is a disease state which has both genetic component and environmental factors involved in causing it. It is caused by the deletion or damage in a gene known as Ob gene putting the subjects with these deletions at high risks of developing obesity. A diet rich in fat can also lead to obesity because a high fat diet stimulates a person to eat more. Another important reason for obesity is psychological disorders which include depression, eating disorders like binge eating and increased diet in times of stress. Obesity itself can also serve as a reason because it might lead for a person to lose his self confidence and hence the person loses the will to exercise and adopt weight loss plans (Biddle et al 2009). Literature Review Food Choices: Obesity is the result of a number of factors. unhealthy dietary habits and food consumption patterns remain the most important of them. People, and specially children, are attracted towards junk food and high calorie food stuff. The consumption of calorie-dense food is identified as a highly threatening factor for increased childhood obesity (Veugelers & Fitzgerald, 2005). The most important factor that promotes such unhealthy dietary habits among the children is the exposure of high-calorie food on the television. There is a strong relationship between unhealthy food advertisement and increasing obesity among children Lobstein & Dibb, 2005). On the other

Life is full of equation solving. You probably don’t even realize when you are solving equations.

Take, for instance, your cell phone plan. Your cell phone carrier charges you a flat rate of $60 a month for unlimited talk/text and 4 GB of data. You are charged $5 for every GB you go over. If one month you use 7 GB, how much did you spend? Thought question: If this pattern continues, should you think about switching to the 10 GB plan for $80?

Another example would be your paycheck. You earn $13 an hour plus time-and-a-half overtime for anything over 40 hours. One week you worked 46 hours and the next week you worked 51 hours. What would your gross pay be for that two-week period? Thought question: Using that pay period as an example, would you rather have a pay raise of $15 an hour but no overtime pay, or keep your current rate and take the overtime?

Bet you could figure those out!

For this discussion, include two different parts in your original post:

Part 1: Pick one of the above examples and set up your equation and work it out completely showing all of your steps. Then answer the thought question and justify your answer.

Part 2: The above are just two examples of how equations are used in day-to-day life. Describe two examples where you use equations in your daily life. Set up and solve one of your examples. Here is an example of what you are being asked to do:
