Fairy Tale Summative Assessment
“Fractured fairy tales are traditional fairy tales, rearranged to create new plots with fundamentally different meanings or messages. Fractured fairy tales are closely related to fairytale parodies, but the two serve different purposes: parodies mock individual tales and the genre as a whole; fractured fairy tales, with a reforming intent, seek to impart updated social and moral messages.”
Task: We have read several fairy tales and talked about the elements that are found within a fairytale, now you will write your own fractured fairy tale. For this assignment, you must choose a classic fairytale from the list below and modernize it. You must include at least five (5) elements of fairytales to include in your three-page minimum, double-spaced story, MLA-formatted story. With this assignment, you will have writing liberties, meaning you may change some of the details of the original tale to suit your story – you are the writer, so you are in charge! Have fun with this assignment. Be original and creative.
Choose the following situations to explore for your fractured fairy tale:
-
Rewrite a fairy tale from the antagonist’s (villain’s) point of view.
Requirements:
-
All rewrites must be original works, not copies of other twisted tales
-
Your story must contain elements of the original, enough so a reader can make the connection between your story and the one being mimicked.
-
Violence and weapons may not be used to solve conflicts – be creative!
-
Include “common fairy tale elements” in your fractured tale. See PowerPoint on Google Classroom
