According to Kalat, the hippocampus is known to be responsible for maintaining episodic memory, ability to recall single events, in human beings (252). The role of the hippocampus in memory consolidation was better understood after a surgical operation performed on Henry Molaison (H.M) , where a larger portion of the hippocampus was removed in order to combat epileptic seizures that affected H.M. On the other hand, there are several misconceptions about the effects of amnesia to the affected people. Firstly, a common misconception about amnesia is that the victims of the condition encounter total loss of their previous life memory. This is not the case because H.M could recall some moments of his past life (Kalat 249). In addition, there is a misconception that people suffering from any form of amnesia can recover their memories suddenly. This is not true because in normal occurrences, memory recovery, for patients who finally regain fully from amnesia, is gradual.
