Evaluation of the Movie “The Dangerous Minds”

The lead character in this movie is an unqualified and inexperienced teacher who is thrown into a situation in which she has to handle a class of urban black and Hispanic children. Beside the hostile teaching environment, she emerges as a triumphant hero due to her motivated approach. She miraculously rescues her students from their deprived surroundings and builds a sense to believe in them selves. I believe that a teacher plays an important role in shaping the personality of students. However, the teacher’s role that is being played in the movie by Michelle Pfeiffer is far from reality. The underlying message given by this movie suggests that teachers have the ability and skills which they can use effectively in changing the lives of their students living in “non-white” environment. This movie highlights the basic idea that one should take pride in his/her culture, religion, values and tradition rather considering your identity as a “misfortune.” Dangerous Minds represents the struggle of an ex-marine teacher Ms.Johnson in connecting with her students and helping them to reform their personalities both socially and morally. This movie also highlights that how in America the younger generation from different cultural backgrounds feel themselves inferior as compare to white people. In my opinion the message conveyed through this movie is to remain steady on your stance no matter how hard or bad the circumstances turn for you. hope and determination is what help you most in getting through the hard times.
