Milestones in Language and Literacy

As a teacher, it is crucial to know the milestones for language and literacy based on the age and developmental level of students in order to know how to differentiate and accommodate students’ needs.

Part 1: Milestones in Language and Literacy Chart

Research the specific milestones related to the elementary grade K-8 state English Language Arts standards for the following areas of literacy:

  • Language development
  • Reading development
  • Writing
  • Listening
  • Speaking
  • Presenting

Using your research, complete the “Milestones in Language and Literacy” template, which will serve as a resource for the remaining assignments and field experiences within this course.

Support your findings with a minimum of three scholarly resources.

Part 2: Language and Literacy Reflection

Using the “Milestones in Language and Literacy” template, summarize and reflect upon the factors affecting language development and emergent literacy in 250-500 words. Within your reflection, describe:

  • The importance of building on students’ current language skills to promote language.
  • The effect of language and literacy development on language acquisition.
  • How you will use your findings in your future professional practice.

Support your findings with two scholarly resources.

Question 1 page 1 – 350 words

The Module 2 Commentary notes the short and long term risks of terrorist attacks resulting from globalization – defined as the economic and social interdependence between countries.  This facilitates exchanges between countries such as trade and ideas.  The promotion of exchanges between countries may also be exploited by those who would do harm to our country.

In a sense, then, our leaders today have become risk managers.  Risk management involves identifying risk and determining acceptable risk and non-acceptable risk levels. This should be a self-evident concept, right?  For example, it has been stated that “on average, cigarettes kill as many people as would die if three passenger-laden jumbo jets crashed every day, month after month, year after year.”  Knowing the risk, why do people continue to smoke?  How do we explain this in terms of risk management?

Question 2 separate page

We have agreed that the concept of globalization has provided both benefits and risks to the world of nations.  Module 2 identifies a number of “transnational risks.”  It goes on to assert that one of the factors contributing to these risks is the “widespread use of information technology communication (e.g., Internet, cell phones, social media) to mobilize individuals and groups, acquire resources, and in some cases garner external attention and support.”  Can social media constitute a risk to our national security?  Explain your position.

In this assignment, you will deconstruct a scenario, and using various learning theories and philosophies, you will identify the importance and value of creating a personalized learning plan. This learning event provides an opportunity to put theory into practice to meet the needs of diverse and unique learners. In this scenario, you will analyze critical factors to determine what best practices are needed to foster growth and development by creating a learning plan that is designed to meet the needs of the individual learner.

Scenario

Bill is 48 years old and has repaired lawn mowers in his small shop in Fairview, Tennessee for the last 8 years. He is about 30 miles from Nashville, Tennessee, and he is just 12 miles from Dickson, Tennessee. He has deliberately kept his business small to control costs and complexity. Last week, he received a bulletin from this leading tractor manufacturer that it is introducing a new model with a new computer-based monitoring system. Although he has dealt with limited applications of computer chips in these machines, this is a much more sophisticated application. He knows that several of his customers own this brand of mower and that they are likely to buy the new models. He wants to learn how to repair these computer-based monitoring systems. In the bulletin, the company announced a limited number of seminars at the manufacturing plant in Horicon, Wisconsin. It has also announced a series of Webinars and online training sessions for the new innovation. There is also a manufacturer’s service manual for the new models. Bill cannot take time off or afford to travel to the seminars.

Answer the following questions based on the scenario:

  • What do you think Bill should do to construct a learning plan? If he were to write one out, formally, what might it look like? How would you express his learning needs? What would his terminal performance objective look like?
  • What kinds of self-motivation does Bill have? Discuss ways in which Bill will apply elements of the affective domain in this learning project.
  • How can Bill apply the cognitive concept of metacognition and its extension, reflexivity, from constructivist theory? How do Piaget’s ideas on assimilation and accommodation apply to this example of adult learning?
  • What other elements or characteristics of constructivist learning theory might he apply here? How can he learn what he needs to learn as quickly and as thoroughly as possible?

Use research, and APA format to construct your response. Your paper should include a title page, abstract and reference page along with the content.

Graduate Programs Discussion Boards

Discussion Boards (DB) are a key component of online learning. They foster active participation of learners and dialog with fellow learners and instructors. Graduate-level courses require learners to create original posts to course DBs and to engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the course. Original posts and responses should be substantive, and if references are made to the works of others, APA guidelines for in-text citations and references apply.

Minimum Weekly DB Expectations

  • Post an original and thoughtful Main Post to the DB prompt.
  • Respond to at least 2 other posts from learners and/or the instructor (Response Posts).
  • The first contribution (Main Post or Response Post) must be posted before midnight (Central time) on Friday of each week.
  • Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week.
  • For DB assignment prompts with a Part One and Part Two, Part One should be addressed in the first week of the unit with a Main Post and minimum of 2 Response Posts, and Part Two should be addressed in the second week of the unit with a Main Post and a minimum of 2 Response Posts.

More on DBs

At the end of each unit, DB participation is assessed based on level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion. DBs allow learners to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content. Because it is not possible to engage in two-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB are accepted after the end of the unit. Learners must demonstrate an appropriate depth of understanding of course content to receive credit for having submitted substantive posts. Typically, this is achieved with 6–7 strong paragraphs for Main Posts and 2–3 strong paragraphs for Response Posts.

Discussion Board Question Details

Part 1

Read the article titled Nine Characteristics of High Performing Schools in the Course Materials resources for this Unit. Complete the following:

  • Discuss what you learned from this article that you can apply in your daily work life.
  • Select the 4 characteristics that you feel best exemplify quality in education, and place them in order of importance.
  • Why did you select each of these four characteristics over the remaining 5 characteristics that you did not select?
  • How does your selection compare with other classmates’ selections?
  • Why is there a difference?
  • Where are the similarities?

Part 2

Consider the article titled Nine Characteristics of High Performing Schools. Choose 2 of the characteristics that would mean the most for your organization or an organization of which you know, and complete the following:

  • Discuss with your other classmates how one of the following styles might be used by a leader to address deficiencies in any one of the areas that you identified:
    • Situational leadership
    • Bureaucratic leadership
    • Transactional leadership
    • Charismatic leadership
    • Servant leadership
  • Discuss the choices that other students have made, and identify the strengths and weaknesses in the potential usage of the styles.
  • As a leader in your organization, what steps might you take to implement changes that could enhance the characteristics that you have selected?

In your own words, post a substantive response to the Discussion Board question(s) and comment on other postings. Your response should address the DB question(s) and move the conversation forward. You will be graded on the quality of your postings, including mastery of the concept as well as critical thinking. If asked for your opinion, do not simply state that it is a good or bad idea; elaborate on your reasons and argument. Include enough detail to substantiate your thinking as well as your position on the questions or comments.
