Assignment 1: Project Analysis and Instructional Objectives

Due Week 4 and worth 125 points

In Week 1, you identified a need, such as new equipment, expanding curriculum, change in procedures, and so forth, that you want to address through the instructional curriculum you will create for your class project. You also provided a rationale concerning why the problem or need exists, outlined a goal for the project, and proposed instructional strategies. Each week is a building block as we move through the stages for planning instructional design to address the identified need. The purpose of this assignment is to document the planning process. Use the Internet to locate information that you believe will assist you with your project.

Write a two to four (2-4) page paper in which you:

  1. Develop a needs analysis for the identified need.
  2. Determine the learner characteristics for the identified need.
  3. Create a minimum of three (3) instructional objectives. Write one (1) objective from each of the following domains: the cognitive, behavioral, and affective domains for the identified need.
  4. Create a procedural analysis flowchart that visually depicts your project using Excel, Visio, or one of their equivalents such as OpenOffice or Dia. In the flowchart, identify the starting points, decision steps, and ending points related to the learning task. Note: The graphically depicted solution is not included in the required page length. You may also find Office diagram templates useful. Free template downloads are located at: (https://www.google.com/search?ei=nJgzXb_dM5bdtQbskIPgBw&q=process+flow+chart+template+word+free+download&oq=microsoft+template+for+project+flow+chart&gs_l=psy-ab.1.0.0i71l8.0.0..12469…0.0..0.0.0…….0……gws-wiz.WTBEXR7CfZo).
  5. Use your textbook, Internet, and/or the Strayer University Online Library (https://research.strayer.edu) to locate at least two (2) reputable references (no more than ten [10] years old). Note: Appropriate academic resources include reputable websites, scholarly texts, and peer-reviewed articles. Wikipedia and other wikis do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Be typed, double spaced, using Times New Roman font (size 12), with one-inch margins on all sides; citations and references must follow APA or school-specific format. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Include a cover page containing the title of the assignment, the student’s name, the professor’s name, the course title, and the date. The cover page and the reference page are not included in the required assignment page length.
  • Include charts or diagrams created in Excel, Visio, MS Project, a standard MS Office template, or one of their equivalents such as Open Project, Dia, and OpenOffice. The completed diagrams / charts must be imported into the Word document before the paper is submitted.

The specific course learning outcome associated with this assignment is:

  • Conduct a needs assessment, learner analysis, contextual analysis, and instructional analysis related to an instructional problem.

Cultural Diversity in International Negotiation

Cultures can have very different approaches to defining and using power. Failure to understand the power strategies of the other culture can lead to stagnant negotiations, frustration, and even complete cessation of talks. Greater understanding of each party’s power strategies can create opportunities for leverage and positive negotiated outcomes.

For the first paragraph of your posting, discuss some of the conflict resolution theories that are available from your course text and other research. The application of conflict resolution theories in intercultural situations is complex. What can we learn from conflict resolution theories for use in multi-cultural negotiation and leadership?

For the second paragraph of your posting, select any one of the following bullet points and address all elements of your chosen bullet point. Select a different bullet point section than what your classmates have already posted so that we can engage several discussions on relevant topics. If all the bullet points have been addressed, then you may begin to re-use the bullet points with the expectation that varied responses continue.

  • Describe the power strategies of Asian negotiations. The applications of these power strategies include blaming, shaming, face-saving, threats, and acts of ultimatums. Also included are acts and recommendations of power people in places of authority. What are implications of these types of strategies for international negotiations?
  • What are the power strategies used by Western/US negotiators? How do they differ from power strategies used by Eastern/Asian negotiators?
  • Evaluate the influence of individualism versus collectivism to the international negotiation process, particularly with respect to use of power and decision making.
  • How can effective international negotiators and their teams prepare themselves for foreseen power strategies in the international arena? What strategies can international negotiators enable when in environments of hostile power strategies?
  • Conflict resolution theories can be applied effectively through case studies and simulations (to teach leaders/negotiators how to use them). In addition, ongoing communication through conflict resolution professionals is productive. What other methodologies of conflict resolution training might be effective?

The final paragraph (three or four sentences) of your initial post should summarize the one or two key points that you are making in your initial response.

The Discussion Board (DB) is part of the core of online learning. Classroom discussion in an online environment requires the active participation of learners and the instructor to create robust interaction and dialogue. Every learner is expected to create an original response to the open-ended DB question as well as engage in dialogue by responding to posts created by others throughout the week. At the end of each unit, DB participation will be assessed based on both level of engagement and the quality of the contribution to the discussion.

At a minimum, each learner will be expected to post an original and thoughtful response to the DB question and contribute to the weekly dialogue by responding to at least 2 other posts from learners. The first contribution must be posted before midnight (Central Time) on Friday of each week. Two additional responses are required after Friday of each week. Learners are highly encouraged to engage on the Discussion Board early and often, as that is the primary way the university tracks class attendance and participation.

The purpose of the Discussion Board is to allow learners to learn through sharing ideas and experiences as they relate to course content and the DB question. Because it is not possible to engage in 2-way dialogue after a conversation has ended, no posts to the DB will be accepted after the end of each unit.

Deliverable Specifics

Part 1

What are some of the educational claims of popular tablets, laptops, and mobile devices? Do you believe that these claims are valid? Can such devices increase accuracy and speed of research projects? What advantages and disadvantages do you see in online research? How might you plan a research project to find the best and most reliable academic resources for a project? How do your approaches differ from those of your classmates?

Part 2

Locate an advertisement or commercial that implies research study results. Describe the claims made, and discuss how differences in sampling of the population might create biased results. Discuss what could account for the bias results. Read the posts of your classmates, and respond with constructive feedback, suggestions, questions, and additional resources as appropriate and in alignment with the AIU Discussion Board Policy. You will be graded using the Grading Rubric below.

In your own words, post a substantive response to the Discussion Board question(s) and comment on other postings. Your response should address the DB question(s) and move the conversation forward. You will be graded on the quality of your postings, including mastery of the concept as well as critical thinking. If asked for your opinion, do not simply state that it is a good or bad idea; elaborate on your reasons and argument. Include enough detail to substantiate your thinking as well as your position on the questions or comments.
