What is Brain-Based Learning?

Prepare

Reflect
Knowing the value of what one learns and how it can be meaningfully applied to one’s practice or skill-set is always an important factor in the learning process. Jensen states that “if you don’t know why you do what you do, it’s less purposeful and less professional” (2008, p.6). As such, the most fundamental principles of brain-based learning (BBL), also referred to as brain-research based learning (BRBL), must show value and application to the topic of curriculum and instruction. Knowing how one learns is critical to effectively reaching diverse populations of learners.

Content Instructions
Construct a formal essay that follows the Content and Writing Instructions below:

  • Analyze a minimum of three fundamental ideas that either added to or enhanced your understanding of brain-based learning including your own working definition of brain-based learning.
  • Considering the ten principles Jensen presents in the Principles of Brain-Based Learning (Links to an external site.), discuss how one or two specific principles apply to you personally based on either your own learning or that of those you have had experience with in a teaching and learning environment.

Written Communication Instructions

  • Length Requirement: Two to four pages not including the title and references pages.
  • Syntax and Mechanics: Display meticulous comprehension and organization of syntax and mechanics, such as spelling and grammar.

After you have thoughtfully considered the learning theories, the next step is to develop your pedagogy, or effective teaching methods, through instructional strategies.

Instructional strategies encompass all the techniques teachers use to make learning engaging, relevant, and attainable to students. It is important to understand the various strategies you can use to instruct students and to meet the various needs of all students through these strategies.

Critical Friends Forum – Action Research Literature Review Draft [WLO: 3][CLO: 3, 5]

This week we will continue our Critical Friends discussion forums. Since you are drafting, revising, and refining each section of your action research proposal each week of the course to build toward your Final Action Research Proposal, each week you will have the opportunity to engage with your Critical Friends to continuously improve your work based on meaningful feedback. This discussion forum will provide an outlet for sharing the draft of your Action Research Literature Review (that you created in your Week Three Assignment) and obtaining further formative feedback from your classmates and instructor. At this point, you may not yet have your instructor’s feedback to make revisions before sharing with peers, but you may still move forward with this discussion. The purpose of the Critical Friend Forums is to share your current work to get targeted, meaningful feedback. If you have any particular area(s) that you are struggling with or need more feedback, please request for your Critical Friends to focus their feedback, perspectives, insights, and questions in that specified area. The sections of the Action Research Literature Review (from the Week Three Assignment) you should include are as follows:

  • Research Summary 1
  • Research Summary 2
  • Application to Findings and Author’s Position

One of the qualities of great leaders and professionals is to be open to and objective about feedback – this is something you will likely need to do in your own professional role, so getting used to seeking and considering feedback objectively is a critical skill for all professionals in any field. Remember that when giving and receiving feedback, it is important to be objective and not take feedback personally. All feedback should be geared toward helping each other construct a quality action research proposal, support success, and encourage critical thinking about action research. Once you have thought critically about feedback you have received, if you disagree with it, that is fine. You can continue to respectfully engage in discussion and build understanding by asking questions and sharing insights and perspectives.
