Week 3 Discussion – New Kid at School

After completing this week’s Readings and Resources, respond to the following questions.

You have just become the new principal at a school in your town. You have followed a well-loved principal who has been at the school for fifteen years. During discussions at staff meetings, you constantly hear, “When Ms. A was here, she would” and the teacher expounds on the strategies of Ms. A. Someone verbalizes a problem that exists, and you hear a teacher say, “Now when Mrs. A was here, she” and this teacher explains how Ms. A would have handled it. (It reminded you of the days when you were a substitute teacher, and the students would constantly remind you of the way their teacher would have responded).

Additionally, in one of the first staff meetings early in the year, the teachers inform you that on Fridays their former principal would bring all the students into the gym and allow the teachers to leave 30 minutes early. Keep in mind the suggestions of Ms. Bohn as you respond to the following questions:

  •  What should you say when teachers remind you of Ms. A. and her wonderful love for them.
  • You know that the school is about to be placed on the district’s list of low-performing schools. Should you remind them of that as you defend your own leadership? Do you even need to defend your leadership?
  • Lastly, how will you respond to the fact that for many years the staff left thirty minutes early on Fridays while the principal handled student dismissal from the gym? (Maybe you are all for it)!

Your initial response is due by 11:55 p.m. Eastern Time on Wednesday and should be between 200-250 words. The initial posting should be a statement of your point of view on the question, supported by the required readings. You are also required to post a response to at least two of your fellow classmates by 11:55 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday and it should be between 50-75 words each. The responses should also be a substantive response that demonstrates a comprehension of the reading material. Responses such as “I agree” or “I disagree” are not acceptable or will not be counted as a response.

Readings to help with answer

Use Assessing Student Learning: A Common Sense Guide to read the following:

  • Chapter 14, “Valuing Assessment and the People Who Contribute,” pages 175–186.

Use the Internet to read the following:

Question:

Introduction

For this Question, you will apply what you have gained from the readings about the misunderstanding of and the resulting resistance to assessment efforts. You will also propose known strategies for navigating the resistance to assessment, as presented in the readings. In this real-world, on-the-job, practical question, you will assume the role of a member of student services or an academic department or a program that serve students. Those who work in your academic department or program are expected to collaborate on implementing an assessment plan, but there has been some resistance. You will create two email messages:

  1. The first to a supervisor who has asked you to look into the controversy regarding assessment.
  2. The second to a colleague, a co-worker you have heard complain about “what the administration is expecting us to do now.”

Instructions

  • Assuming the role of a member of a student services or an academic department or program, develop two e-mail messages as described below. These messages are to be concise and professional. In both e-mail messages, provide citations from the readings thus far in the course to support your position and provide a list of references from the readings that you use for this question. Be sure to apply the submission requirements described below.
  • Your first e-mail message is to the head of the department, your direct supervisor, who is aware that there has been some resistance to assessment among those working in your academic department or program. Your supervisor has asked you to report on what assessment is, what common obstacles to involvement exist, and how your department can engage faculty or staff members in assessment efforts.
  • The second e-mail message is to be directed to a fellow member of your department or program, one whom you have heard complain about “what the administration is expecting us to do now.” In this more informal e-mail message, persuade your colleague of the value of assessment and the reasons they should be involved.

Submission Requirements

Your submission should meet the following requirements:

  • Written communication: Written communication is free of errors that detract from the overall message.
  • Resources: Support ideas, claims, and concepts with evidence from scholarly literature.
  • APA formatting: Resources and citations are formatted according to current APA style and formatting.
  • Length: 1–1.5 pages for each e-mail message (for a total of 2–3 pages), single-spaced, excluding references page.

Assignment: Analyze Twitter Activity and Connection

Instructions

In this activity, you will circle back with your Twitter activity and discuss political, legal, or ethical considerations as they specifically pertain to assessment and evaluation. By this time, you may have engaged in a fairly substantial conversation about outside influencers and their impact on your field.

If you were unable to make a connection via Twitter, no problem. An alternative would be to research a prominent blogger who may affect your particular situation or field. For example, a state agency may impact how you assess learning (in most fields).

Regardless of whether you made a connection via Twitter or not, you will make connections between readings in the course and activities in which you have participated. All of these activities will influence your writing for this week.

In your reflection, you will detail interactions that you had via Twitter (or the alternative listed above) and how those interactions relate to the future of your field.

Consider the following:

  • What is the role that key influencers in politics, law and/or ethics play in the future of the field?
  • What is your vision of your future as an instructional designer?
  • Has that vision changed from Week 1 to Week 7? Did your chosen professional help you change that vision?

Length: 5-7 pages

References: Include a minimum of five credible resources

Your reflection should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts that are presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect graduate-level writing and APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy.

Upload your document and click the Submit to Dropbox button. Although not required, you might spark some conversation by sharing your assignment or an abbreviation of your thoughts in the ID CoP. Remember that your instructor will provide feedback through the course.

Assignment Instructions

Instructions: Please carefully read the following assignment details in its entirety. There are many components to this particular assignment, and each component is graded.

This essay should be between 900 and 1000 words, excluding the required annotated bibliography.
First, you will choose a public debate that has at least two opposing sides (please do not reuse your Toulmin essay topic). As before, you need to research that topic in order to narrow the topic’s scope, so it can be easily discussed in 1000 word essay. Note: Consider your audience as laymen in the field who have only general knowledge of your topic.

This essay must include a minimum of five sources.  Three should be peer-reviewed sources, preferably from the APUS databases.  From the library welcome page, click on Advanced Search at the bottom of the page and then check the “peer reviewed” sources box filter. The following should clarify the term “peer-reviewed”:  http://youtu.be/rOCQZ7QnoN0. You may use eBooks; however, as discussed in your textbook, books generally are not as current as peer-reviewed articles.  You may also use primary sources (interviews, statistics, etc); however, these primary sources should be obtained from experts within that field.  If you cannot find strong sources for your chosen topic, then change your topic. If you have a question about the validity of a source, please contact a librarian: [email protected]
Make sure to include the following sections in your essay:

an introduction and claim,
background,
body,
and a conclusion.

Make sure your essay includes the following:

The background for your chosen topic,A discussion of both sides of the debate, including core values or warrants underlying their argumentsYour common ground (Rogerian) solution/claimAn explanation of how that common ground claim can resolve the core issue for both sides.

After you have written your essay, please make sure to revise the content of your essay. Lastly, be sure to edit your essay by checking grammar, format, and smaller technical details. Please make sure your essay is written in third person.

The Annotated Bibliography

As with the Toulmin essay, an annotated Bibliography (AB) is due with your Rogerian essay. The following is a sample of an annotated bibliography entry.

Clark, Irene L. The Genre of Argument. Fort Worth, TX: Harcourt Brace, 1998. Print.

Clark’s textbook identifies the major steps to developing a well-researched and well-written argumentative essay. It is older, but still contains much useful material on process. Professional essays are included in the text as models. It will help me mostly with writing and organization, since internet research has changed since 1998.
