This is a very important assignment, as you will be determining the topic you will use for the rest of the course—to both research and write about. And it could be a topic related to your eventual capstone project at the end of your program. While seemingly simple, it is a challenge to determine a specific, focused topic with clearly related subtopics. At the same time, this is an essential skill that will relate to all future assignments leading up to your capstone project. Use the resources that have been provided to help you with this task.

This week, you will provide a summary of how you went about taking a general area of interest (your degree program) and narrowed that down to a topic of interest, along with two to three specific related subtopics. These will be used in Week 5’s Develop an Introduction exercise, and they will become the main sections of the Week 8 Signature Assignment paper.

Then find peer-reviewed scholarly research articles, at least one scholarly resource to support each of your subtopics. Use these as references (citations) when composing your summary. It may be a good idea to start by considering an outline related to the topic. Remember to include an introduction, APA-style headings (and subheadings if needed), a conclusion, and a references section.

First, reflect on the process you went through to focus your main topic and then how you determined the related subtopics (1 page).

Second, (2-3 pages)

  • What is the main topic, and why is it important?
    • What is the first related subtopic, and how does it relate to the main topic?
    • What is the second related subtopic, and how does it relate to the main topic?
    • What is the third related subtopic, and how does it relate to the main topic?
  • Consider how you will go about further discussing these topics.

Total length: 3-4 pages, not including title and reference pages

References: Include a minimum of 3 peer-reviewed scholarly resources to support your topic

Your paper or presentation should demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the ideas and concepts presented in the course and provide new thoughts and insights relating directly to this topic. Your response should reflect scholarly writing and current APA standards. Be sure to adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Policy. Review NCU’s Information Literacy Tutorial to refresh your knowledge of how to achieve academic integrity.

Receiving Aid and Support during Emergencies

Superstorm Sandy and Hurricane Katrina raised many questions about the response of the Federal Government, and more specifically, the response of FEMA to natural disasters. FEMA was criticized for the delay in its response in parts of New York City mainly, the citizens of Long Island.

On the basis of you knowledge and understanding of the process of receiving State aid under FEMA and your knowledge about the conditions during Superstorm Sandy, answer the following questions:

  • Do you think FEMA was ready for a disaster such as Superstorm Sandy?
  • What were some of the challenges faced by FEMA with regard to its response to Superstorm Sandy?
  • How do you feel about the evacuation efforts on the part of several hospitals in the wake of Hurricane Sandy?
  • In the wake of Katrina, how did the relationship between the New Orleans Mayor and the Governor of Louisiana slow the flow of FEMA aid?
  • Should politics play a role when there is a disaster looming?
  • List the steps to create a process map showing the various steps required to receive FEMA assistance during an emergency and disaster management (EDM).

Individuals in the public health sector are often called upon to be the first responders within twenty-four hours of a bioterrorist attack. These first responders must take steps to remain safe while doing their jobs. One way to accomplish this is by using Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). However, in some cases, the first responders may not have adequate training to use the PPE correctly. In other cases, the proper PPE may not be readily available in quantities that are required to protect all first responders. On the basis of your understanding of this topic, answer the following questions regarding the above scenario:

  • What other issues that may occur when using PPE?
  • What are your suggestions to overcome these issues to ensure that all first responders are safe when responding to a bioterrorist attack? How would you implement these suggestions?

Working with other agencies can often help to gather the manpower necessary to treat an influx of patients. In times of disaster, individuals from these agencies may need to act as traditional first responders. However, in case of an outbreak of Ebola hemorrhagic fever, these individuals may be hesitant to potentially put themselves in danger.

On the basis of your understanding of the topic, answer the following questions:

  • What fears or reservations may these individuals from other agencies have about acting as traditional first responders?
  • How would you eliminate these fears in an effort to obtain the man power necessary to treat the influx of patients? Provide suggestions. Be sure to justify your response with factual support.
  • What would you do if you were unable to eliminate these fears?

The rest of the world has had numerous experiences in dealing with attacks involving chemical weapons. Since the United States has not had any significant experience with attacks involving chemical weapons, the experiences of Europe or Israel can be used as a guide for preparing the healthcare industry in the United States for such events.

On the basis of your readings, answer the following questions:

  • How can the events that occur in Europe and the other parts of the world assist us in securing our healthcare industry in the United States in preparing for attacks involving chemical weapons?
  • In terms of the characteristics of each country such as the population and availability of resources, what are the similarities and dissimilarities between the United States and the United Kingdom? How will these similarities and dissimilarities affect the way the two countries plan for a disaster scenario?

The use of training exercises in preparing for disaster scenarios is an important component of any emergency preparedness plan. Training exercises may be conducted at regularly planned intervals, or they can be conducted at random and without warning. Answer the following questions regarding the training exercises for preparation for an emergency or disaster scenario:

  • What are the advantages of conducting training exercises at regularly planned intervals? Why? What are the advantages of conducting training exercises at random and without warning? Why?
  • Under what circumstances is it most appropriate to conduct training exercises at regularly planned intervals? Why?
  • Under what circumstances is it most appropriate to conduct unannounced training exercises? Why?

ASSIGNMENT PREPARATION FOR WEEK 4

Review the instructions for the assignment due in Week 4.

Assignment one:  Essay 75 points

Instructions

Choose one of the three reading selections from the list of topic choices below. The focus is on brief but important primary source material written by important authors. In each case, the subject relates to the problems of certain people who are oppressed or impoverished. In each topic, a different genre or approach is adopted to help readers see and perhaps address the problem. Read the selections as identified with each topic below. Write a 4–5 paragraph essay (350 words minimum) that analyzes the work following the list of things your paper should cover, given just after the topics.

Topic Choices
  • Reading selection of Jane Austen’s novel Pride and Prejudice. Her works are very popular today, with Austen reading clubs and all types of new books and events based on her ideas. In 2017, England printed new £10 bank notes bearing Austen’s image. Chapter 43 should be read in full.
  • Reading selection from Samuel Johnson, No. 91. Sufficiency of the English Language, an essay first published in The Rambler. Johnson was the editor of two coffeehouse magazines, The Rambler (1750–52) and The Idler (1758–60), and was the author of Dictionary of the English Language. He was also the subject of one of the first biographies, by James Boswell. In his life, Johnson overcame numerous illnesses and handicaps.
  • Reading selection of Olympe de Gouges’s Declaration of the Rights of Woman and the Female citizen (written in 1791). The selection should be read in full, with background provided on page 874 of our class text. You should also look at the revolutionary document of 1789 that she is “correcting,” called Declaration of the Rights of Man. Olympe de Gouges has the status of women as her main concern. The general context is the French Revolution and the attempts to redefine rights and status once one replaces monarchy.

For the reading selection and topic you choose, your paper should cover the following:

  1. Briefly introduce the writer and the situation that this reading is about.
  2. Identify the genre or nature of the reading. (Who is the author; why did he or she write this piece?)
  3. Using specific examples or lines within the reading, suggest the author’s key views and key aims for the reading audience. (Give a 1–2 paragraph summary of ideas.)
  4. Describe how the reading impacted you. Think about any similar situations today and key lessons you get from the reading that could be relevant to one’s professional and personal life.
