The English language arts content area encompasses a range of literacy skills, including reading, writing, listening, speaking, and language. The ability to perform these vital skills influences all content areas and sets a foundation for a child’s educational and professional future.

The purpose of this assignment is to analyze and select various instructional strategies specifically for reading and language development.

In this assignment, you will design a lesson plan intended to engage students in these strategies, while also making learning appropriately higher-order and meaningful.

Design a lesson plan for the elementary grade of your choice using the “COE Lesson Plan Template,” found in the Student Success Center. The lesson plan template should be completed in its entirety and should:

Teach both reading and language development/vocabulary to elementary students:

  • Younger elementary students will primarily be taught lessons on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, word study, frequently used vocabulary words, and some text comprehension.
  • Older elementary students will primarily be taught lessons on vocabulary, including English language arts content terminology, and text comprehension.
  • Align to state or national standards for English language arts (use the Common Core standards or your state’s standards). State of Florida Please
  • Use a grade-appropriate fiction or non-fiction text.
  • Include grade- and content-appropriate vocabulary.
  • Incorporate appropriate formative or summative assessment.
  • Utilize appropriate English language arts practices and materials.
  • Demonstrate organization and logic.

After designing the lesson plan, in 150-250 words, reflect on how you engaged complex thinking and meaning making within the scope of the reading and language/vocabulary lesson. Emphasize how you encouraged critical thinking and understanding of the text and language/vocabulary.

Submit your lesson plan and reflection as one deliverable.

Work with a mentor teacher to create a class profile that includes all available assessment data on your students. Reiterate with the mentor teacher that all information obtained from your students must be anonymous. You must not report the actual names of students. If your mentor teacher is uncomfortable giving you this information, ask for his or her assistance creating a class profile of a typical group of students in the same grade level and content area as your practicum placement.

You can gather data from in-class assessments or standardized assessments. Be sure to include the following:

  • Student Name
  • Gender
  • Age
  • Reading Performance Level
  • Math Performance Level
  • English Language Learner
  • Socioeconomic Status
  • Ethnicity
  • IEP/504
  • Parent or Caregiver Involvement
  • Internet Accessibility
  • Other (if applicable)

You may not use the “Class Profile” document for your benchmark assignment, but you can use it to help you work with your mentor teacher to create your own class profile.

Using any remaining field experience hours, assist the teacher in providing instruction and support to the class.

In 250-500 words, summarize the collaborative process with your mentor teacher and reflect upon the importance of gathering assessment data for your future professional practice. Be sure to explain why all student data is important in understanding and assessing student needs.

Submit your class profile and summary as one deliverable.

Discussion: Interviewing Techniques

One of the best ways to learn how to do an interview is to watch someone else conduct one. This week, you will view a media clip of someone conducting an interview that is part of an addictions assessment. The interview uses a biopsychosocial approach, in that it collects information about medical aspects (prior illnesses, current medications), social history (childhood, school, employment) and psychological functioning (anxiety, depression). The goal of the interview is to start developing an overall picture of the client.

In this Discussion, you will evaluate which interview strategies would be more effective than others in an addictions assessment.

To prepare:

Review the Learning Resources, including the following:

  • Chapter 5, “Assessment of the Patient,” in The American Psychiatric Publishing Textbook of Substance Abuse Treatment
  • Chemical Dependency Counseling: A Practical Guide
    • Chapter 4, “The Biopsychosocial Interview”
    • Appendix 6, “Sample Biopsychosocial Interview”
  • The media titled Interviewing Techniques

Post a response to the following:

Based on your observation of the addictions professional in the scenario, describe one interview strategy you believe was effectively modeled. Explain why it was effective.

Which interviewing strategies used by the interviewer in the media would you avoid, and why?
