As discussed in Section 3.3 of the text, children like novelty, simplification, repetition, exaggeration, and elaboration in the stories they hear (Coats, 2013).  Think back to your childhood or to your children’s.  What story do you remember as being particularly enjoyable or special? Which of the above mentioned attributes did that story possess? Provide specific examples.  Lastly, discuss why you feel your book of choice still stands out to you today and how we, as parents and teachers, can ensure that our children have pleasing experiences with the books we choose.

Select a method and design appropriate for an applied study.  Case studies, action research, and program development/evaluation are appropriate. Quantitative studies must demonstrate both internal and external validity (e.g., large, random samples, statistical power, and representativeness). Your summary must address the following:

1. Note a specific method, and then design your plan to use in your research.
2. Describe and substantiate the appropriateness of the method, and then design to respond to the stated problem, purpose, and research questions.
3. Note how the proposed method and design accomplish the study goals, why the design is the optimum choice for the proposed research, and how the method aligns with the purpose and research questions. 
4. Provide appropriate foundational research method support for the proposed study design.
5. Explain the particular data gathering techniques and data analyses processes.  Sample size of the study population should be identified and must be appropriate and justified based on the nature of the study design. Quantitative analyses must include justified sample size determination.

When a new study is undertaken, the researcher has many options to consider when selecting a valid research method. Quantitative research allows researchers to gather and manipulate numerical data to answer research questions. Qualitative research requires the analysis of nonnumeric data such as narratives or interviews. Research questions define the study’s purpose, closely guiding the researcher toward the optimal design for his or her investigation. Once a decision has been made whether a qualitative or quantitative study (or a blend of both called mixed methodology) best fits the desired model for the research, the researcher must decide the type of qualitative or quantitative designs to employ.  It is helpful to survey the wide variety of design options available to researchers. While watching the videos, evaluate your own skills to determine if the approach and method are best suited to answer your research questions. When exploring the Sage Research Methods website, consider searching by method or design and by the link to the ‘Methods Map’ that appears at the top of the research results. From there, explore the Methods Map based on the type of method and design you believe is best to address your research topic.
