Dr. Fox and the Impossible Cure for Death: Reflecting on Theatrical Styles of Presentation.

In this essay, you will analyze the production of Dr. Fox and the Impossible Cure for Death. You should incorporate the concepts introduced in the Theme, Drama = Action and The Actor units. This production is a staged reading, so the actors onstage will be acting out the story with their script in hand. Your essay should have a thesis statement that articulates the theme of the play and how the plot and production supports that theme.

Before you see the show:

Be sure to write a clear thesis statement expressing an active theme/mood/premise. You can use your introductory paragraph to express how the the story was familiar or unfamiliar to you.

While watching the show:

You may wish to bring a notebook and pen to take notes on specific details. (Please do not take notes on your phone or tablet, as the light will be distracting for other audience members.) Use your program to help you remember characters’ names.

After the show:

Write a cogent essay in which you make an argument about the theme and/or premise of Dr. Fox and the Impossible Cure for Death, and how the presentation method helps to support that theme. Use specific evidence from the show to support your ideas. Be sure to link your evidence to your overall thesis; the best way to do this is to write a strong topic sentence for each paragraph.

Possible outline for your paper:

Paragraph 1: Introduction. Explain how you found the structure or story of the play familiar or unfamiliar, and how you connected to a specific theme or mood in the play. End this paragraph with a thesis statement that articulates the theme of Dr. Fox and the Impossible Cure for Death and explains how the acting and the text helped make that theme apparent.

Paragraph 2: Discuss the action help set the tone for the play. What you are seeing is a staged reading, does this action help you understand the play and what is happening from scene to scene?

Paragraph 3: Discuss how the text (dialogue) in this production helped you to know the character objectives and subtext. How did the dialogue move the story forward?

Paragraph 4: Discuss how the acting style in this production is different than the styles you have seen in the other productions. What is unique about this style? Where does it place this piece historically?

Conclusion: Reflect on how the lighting, acting and text worked together (or did not work together) to create a unified production concept.

You must write a 500 word, critical response paper to the production of Dr. Fox and the Impossible Cure for Death . [Consider 500 words a minimum word count, not a maximum word count.] Critical responses are academic papers. It is not the same as a theatre review like you might find in a newspaper, and it is not a plot summary. While you will not be expected to incorporate outside research into your critical response, you will still be expected to discuss the performances you view in a thoughtful manner.
