Composition Discussion/Response

This Discussion gives you an opportunity to post a draft of your introduction paragraph for your persuasive essay so that you can receive feedback on its effectiveness from your peers and the instructor. You may find it helpful to post your introduction paragraph early in the unit so that you have time to revise it for the unit’s Assignment based on the feedback you receive and the insights you find from the Learning Activities.

Include all of the following in your Discussion post:

  • A draft of your introduction paragraph for your persuasive essay using one of the techniques described in the Learning Activities
  • A thesis statement as the last sentence of your introduction
  • An explanation of what motivated your decisions when writing the introduction, such as why you used a particular technique and the impact you want your introduction to have on your audience.

To earn full participation credit, you will need to respond substantively to at least two peers’ initial Discussion posts and show active engagement in the discussion as described in the grading rubric. These responses should stay on topic and generate further discussion by asking questions, mentioning relevant examples, and if possible, referencing concepts from the unit Learning Activities.

When responding to a peer, exercise tact and be specific in what you say. Take your time and develop your thoughts so that you can help out a fellow writer. Please do not focus on or mark GUM (grammar, usage, and mechanics) issues. The following questions will help you to create constructive feedback on your peers’ paragraphs:

  • Does the introduction end with a persuasive thesis statement? If not, what changes could be made to the thesis statement?
  • Is the strategy selected for the introduction effective, or might another approach mentioned in the Learning Activities be better?
  • Identify at least one strength and one area of improvement needed for the introduction paragraph.
  • Address any lingering questions you have about your classmate’s argument for change.

All Discussion posts and responses to peers should be written in complete sentences using Standard American English. Before posting, proofread for grammar, spelling, and word-choice issues. Be sure to respond fully to every aspect of the Discussion.

When you refer to concepts from the unit’s Learning Activities, be sure to use a signal phrase like “According to . . .[name of reading].” If you are directly quoting the Learning Activities or another source, be sure to use quotation marks and cite the source using proper APA in-text citations and full references. The Writing Center has resources on APA citation formatting.

Extreme budget cuts for public schools has been plaguing every state across the Nation since 2007.  Budget cuts have gotten to the point where it is literally damaging public education in many states.  In Arizona proposition #RedForEd was put before the government to be approved.  This bill is a request to increase the schools budget to help cover paying the utilities, property costs, supplies, and to increase teacher’s salary.  The Arizona state government was unwilling to accommodate these changes.  So, on Thursday April 26, 2018 teachers across Arizona went on strike.  During the strike almost all the teachers rallied in down town Phoenix at the federal building in protest to the government not agreeing to meet funding needs for the public-school system.  This strike lasted until May 2 when Arizona state government finally agreed to approve the proposition.  To cover the cost for the increased budget there will be a three-present increase to the sales tax for alcohol.  Not everybody has children, but everyone should know the effects that budget cuts have on public schools.  National funding for public schools plummeted drastically when the great recession hit.  The NCES (National Center for Education Statistics) reports that in almost every state they are providing less than two-thirds per student than before the great recession.  Public schools make up most of the next generation of workers and entrepreneurs for the United States. It should be the Federal governments obligation to increase funding for all public schools.

Rough Draft Introduction:

The world of technology is forever advancing, so why is it that the technology we create not reflect what we use on a daily basis? As someone who utilizes a time card to track time for work I feel that this has been neglected by the technology world. There are still many rudimentary ways to track time and even some more current ways to track time but they aren’t even on the same level as most of technology. Mobile technology specifically has been adapted to do almost anything, except track time (in most cases). This is something that over 75% of our work force has but yet we don’t utilize for something so important. Time recording needs to be brought out of archaic times and to the forefront and begin utilizing mobile computing on a much higher level.

The technique I utilized was establishing the issue. I portrayed my issue early and included factual information to improve the interest with my reader right away. I also posed a question in there as well to also help to draw the attention of the reader as well. I would like to get them thinking about the topic before they get into my paper so they can be in the right mindset. Writing has never been my strong point, especially at a collegiate writing level so any recommendations would be much appreciated.
