MULTIPLE LINEAR REGRESSION ANALYSIS

A commercial bank wishes to determine the effectiveness of ATM’s (Automatic Teller Machines) in reducing the service times for their customers. The bank takes a sample of 100 customers across several branches and collects data on the service time in seconds (Y) and the number of transactions (X1) that the customer completes. In this sample X1 varies from a low of 1 to a high of 6.

30 of the customers used an ATM and 70 of the customers used a human teller to carry out their transactions. Some of the customers were in urban branches whereas other customers were in branches outside of the urban area. To take this into account two additional variables were measured.

X2 = 1 if the customer uses an ATM

= 0 if the customer uses a human teller

X3 = 1 if the branch is in an urban area

= 0 if the branch is in an non-urban area.

The following four regressions were carried out with the following results:

I.    Yˆ = 40 + 100X1

II.  Yˆ = 62 + 90X1 – 38X2

III. Yˆ = 42 + 104X1 + 5X3

IV.  Yˆ = 68 + 87X1 – 34X2 + 2X3

1.   Compute the correlation coefficient between the number of transactions and the service time.

2.   Write down the analysis of variance table for the regression of Y on X1, X2, and X3. Using it and any other information provided above, test for the statistical significance of the overall regression equation and determine which variables should be included and which variables should be deleted (if any). In your answer, state the null hypothesis and alternate hypothesis of all tests performed in terms of the Betas, compute the test statistics and explain how you arrive at your conclusions.

3.   Using the regression equation selected in question 2, compute the coefficient of determination and interpret.

4.   Estimate the service time for a customer who uses the ATM machine on 3 transactions in a non-urban branch and obtain a 95% prediction interval for this estimate.

5.   Michael, a customer in an urban branch, took 4.75 minutes (285 seconds) to complete 3 transactions at an ATM machine.

i.             What is the value of the residual if the simple linear regression model (model I) is used?

ii.            Compute the ratio of this residual to the standard error of estimate for the simple linear regression model.

iii.           Does this residual qualify as an outlier? Assuming that it does, explain why this happens.

6.   As the operations manager of this bank, you wish to evaluate the effectiveness of ATM machines. Write a report summarizing your conclusions. In your answer, use the results of the regression analysis to support your points numerically.

7.   A branch in a non-urban area processes 72,000 customer visits per year. Of these visits 36,000 are handled by human tellers and 36,000 are handled by ATM machines. To increase the use of ATM machines the bank adds more ATM machines and charges each customer $1 to use a human teller for each visit.  You are given the following cost and utilization data.

AutomaticTellerMachine (ATM)

Cost per hour

$15

$40

Average number of transactions per customer visit

2.40

1.80

Studies have shown that 40% of the customers will switch to an ATM machine from a human teller to avoid the service charge. Assuming that the average number of transactions per customer visit for those customers who switch to an ATM machine is the same as for those customers who choose not to switch, estimate the cost savings for this branch (1 hour = 3600 seconds).

NOTE: In your analysis on the cost savings, take into account the revenue obtained from the use of human tellers.

Chapter 1: Questions #11 & 12

11. There is an increase in the quality of education.

· If we accept that enhanced education transmutes to improved job skills, then output

Should increase and there is an outward shift of the curve.

a.       The figure of jobless employees rises.

·The curve’s position shouldn’t be affected. Though, there is inward movement of the production which is away from the curve.

b.      A new method advances the effectiveness of mining copper from ore

· The curve shifts outward because there is further production with prevailing resources.

c.         An overwhelming earthquake extinguishes many production amenities.

d.      The curve should shift inward due to damage of resources for example capital.

12. The production possibilities curve clarifies that a single country is inadequate to the arrangements of yield designated by its production possibilities curve. Global specialization shows injecting national resources to production, which a country is extremely effectual at creating. The interchange of these products for products created overseas is the procedure of global trade. Trade and specialization take similar outcome as taking additional and improved assets or realizing better production methods. The productivity profits from better global specialism and trade are the analogous of economic growth.

Appendix Question from Chapter

1. Graphs may be utilized to exemplify the connection between several data. When the two variables adjust in contrasting direction, there exists an inverse relation. The line slopes downward. An undeviating association is when the binary variables adjust in the similar path. The line slopes upward.

Questions from Chapter 2: #1 & 7

7. There was many“dot-com” industries due to the anticipation of economic. Nevertheless, due to lack of data and a market incapable to withstand numerous companies, various were unsuccessful in understanding even a usual revenue and a failed one. Though, many of the initial dot-coms failed to earn trade and industry profits, their stockholders were acquiring enormous dividends from the speculation of the stock market. The industry declined after the new firms’ dropped out of the industry. This took place after the new firms discovered that the production was no longer profitable. The problem did not arise so much from consumer freedom. The consumers confirmed an attention in these services. Due to the heavy rivalry with numerous companies attempting to unveil themselves in the market, the prices became insufficient to shield economic budgets.

1.   What is your health question?

Health Question: HOW SIGNIFICANT IS THE FACTOR OF GENDER IN

PROVIDING QUALITY CARE?

2.   What is your null and alternative hypotheses?

Null Hypothesis: Females display higher rates of depression symptoms

following

Coronary Heart Disease(CHD) and Acute Coronary Syndrome(ACS) than males.

Alternative hypothesis: Both males and females display similar rates of

depression symptoms following Coronary Heart Disease(CHD) and Acute Coronary

Syndrome(ACS).

3.   Describe the data set using summary statistics.

The average age of females in the study group was 64 with a standard

deviation of 13 years. The average age of males in the study group was 61

with a

standard deviation of 12 years.

4.   Identify any limitations you think the data has.

The data set does not account for an individual’s income level or degree of

employment.

5.   Identify the variables you will use in your study.

Variables I will use in my study are marital status and alcohol consumption

level.

Select a common topic or hypothesis and record the topic in your posting, for example: “What is the average number of hours you watch TV every week?” You may use one of your Week Four hypotheses. Sample at least 15 people and record their data in a simple table or chart; study the examples from Unit 12-3. You can gather your data at work, on the phone, or via some other method. This is your “Sampling Design.” Which of the four sampling techniques best describes your design? Explain in moderate detail the method you used to gather your data. In statistics this venture is called the “Methodology.” Make sure you break your sample into classes or groups, such as: males/females or ages or time of day, etc. Calculate the mean, median, and mode for your data as a whole. Now calculate the mean, median, and mode of each of your classes or groups. Indicate which measure of central tendency BEST describes your data and WHY. Then compare your results for each class or group, and point out any interesting results or unusual outcomes between the classes or groups. This is called a “comparative analysis” – using our results to explain interesting outcomes or differences (for example, between men and women). Comment on at least two of your classmates’ postings. Make sure you comment on their hypothesis (topic), their design and whether you agree or do not agree with their BEST measure of central tendency. My hypothesis was: 15.3% of Black Americans are unemplyed
