Discussion Question – Managing Emotions

There are times when you are hurt, defensive, joyous, reserved, controlled, or angry. Acting professionally means controlling your emotions. While outbursts are unwelcome as a way of communicating or expressing yourself, emotions are important indicators of authenticity and can be reflections of the ethical and cultural foundations of an organization.

For the first part of your post:

Compare two leaders you are familiar with, one who managed emotion well and one who did not manage emotion well. Provide specific examples to support your stance on the emotional management of these leaders. How did their emotional management affect the organization?

For the second part of your post, select any one of the following bullet points. Attempt to spread the bullet points out among class members (e.g., not have one bullet point answered by all course participants).

  • Assess how a leader can most effectively manage emotions in the workplace.  As a leader, how can one show appropriate emotional self-control or leverage emotions for organizational benefit?
  • Propose a research-supported policy or guideline statement (three or four action items) an organization might adopt concerning emotional expression in the workplace. How would such a policy enhance organizational culture? How would such a policy enhance ethics in the organization?
  • Propose a brief set of coaching points for how leaders should handle a situation where an employee or a customer is extremely emotional to an unprofessional point?

Conclude your post with a three or four sentence summary of the most important point, lesson or takeaways from your research and analysis for your initial post.

Create a 4 pages page paper that discusses renting an apartment is a better option than buying a house. Correct economic decisions are very essential in the long run and can prove to be beneficial. One such economic decision relates to the choice with regard to renting an apartment or purchasing a house. This choice is an extremely important decision that needs to be taken with care as both renting an apartment and buying a house have their own positive points as well as drawbacks. There are supporters of both these decisions with a few people considering renting as a better option whereas the other group believes that buying is a much wiser decision. Thus, it can be said that renting and buying have their own benefits and drawbacks and a decision needs to be based according to personal needs and the option which serves as a more profitable settlement for the person. Renting is basically a process in which a person rents a house or an apartment for a living but does not have any ownership rights over the house. He has an obligation towards the landlord of a paying a fixed amount to him every month according to the joint decision taken by them. Renting can be considered to be a good option for people who choose to shift every now and then. This is because a person can easily leave a rented house and move to another city rather than having the burden of actually going through the process of selling his house after a few months. Thus it is argued that renting is the best option for people who do not wish to stay in one place for more than a period of two years (Rockwell Publishing Co. 2006, Law 2003). According to Thomas Z. Lys who is a professor of accounting at Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University, “If you believe you’ll be moving in the next four or five years, I’d rent.” The New York Times carried out a survey in this regard and provided for the fact that owing to the rise in the prices of buying a house, renting is a very suitable option considering the economic factors. The analysis identified very important facts that renting an apartment was a better and reasonable option if considered from the financial point of view.&nbsp.

Suppose Atlanta is proposing to finance their new NFL stadium using taxes on hotel rooms. The idea is that this will get visitors (who are likely benefiting from the stadium) to pay for the stadium rather than the locals. Assume that demand for hotel rooms is given by:

P (Q) = 150 − 5Q

where Q is in thousands of rooms. The supply curve (marginal cost curve) is:MC(Q) = 5Q

There are many hotels in the are so this market is competitive (i.e., the equilibrium is where demand and supply curves intersect).

  1. What is the equilibrium price and quantity in this market? What is producer surplus?
  2. Suppose the city sets a tax of t = 10, so that the new marginal cost curve is MC(Q) = 10+5Q. What is the equilibrium price and quantity in this market?
  3. What is the price that the hotels are receiving?
  4. How much of the tax are the hotels paying? What is producer surplus?
  5. Now suppose that the stadium would boost demand for the hotels such that the demand curve would be: P (Q) = 180 − 5Q. Will the hotels back this proposal? (hint: they will back a proposal if the producer surplus increases)
