Case Assignment

The Centers for Disease Control contains many interactive datasets for public use. For this Case Assignment, you will apply basic Excel functions to a spreadsheet generated by the CDC on Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity. Use the Excel Tutorial to learn the steps required for each part of the Case Assignment. Use the optional readings in your Background page to locate additional Excel help and tutorials.

Your assignment consists of three parts:

Part I

Sort the data on the spreadsheet to answer the following questions:

  1. Which state had the highest percent of low-income children aged 2 to less than 5 years who are obese (MBI for age and sex > 95th percentile on CED growth chart)? What is the percent value?
  2. Which state had the highest sample size?
  3. What percent of the total sample size was represented by tribes in the United States?

Save each sort and submit it as a worksheet in your Excel workbook. Label each worksheet.

Part II

Use the linked map generated by this data set to answer the following questions:

  1. What regional trends in this data are illustrated on this map?
  2. Which states showed the highest obesity rates? Which showed the lowest?

Part III

  1. Use the CDC site Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity: Data, Trends and Maps to generate your own table and map by selecting your own criteria. You will need to select a location, an Indicator Category, and then an Indicator from the drop-down menus provided. Once your map and table is generated, scroll to the bottom of the page to locate the citation information you will need for your references section.
  2. Copy and paste the data table you generated into an Excel spreadsheet. Manipulate the columns and cells to display the data accurately, and then report the regions with the highest and lowest trends by sorting the data.

Write 2 page essay on the topic Freedom of press.

However, internet journalism suffers from a lack of structure that often results in ethical breaches and creation of content that is not informative or reliable. While the potential for internet as a tool for mass information is great. its biggest advantage is also its greatest weakness. With so many players in the information sector and a emphasis on being the first one to break a news. there is no check on the quality of the material is produced and distributed, no benchmarks in place and no enforcement of journalistic standards. “It is clear that digital journalism can allow for greater commitment to editorial standards. From better linking to primary sources of information, to greater commitment to transparency, there has never been an age more able to incorporate open, high-quality journalism” (Riordan).

The problem is that online with so much free content available, websites are in a desperate race to get the most viewers and increase ad revenues. There is a significant occurrence of “Click-bait” in internet media outlets, where readers are enticed by sensational, often exaggerated headlines into going to a website link for a news article which may be unrelated to the exact heading. The practice is done to increase the number of users for a certain website and it compromises the integrity of the news. The worse scenarios are in which the news itself is falsified to create reader interest, one innocent example of this phenomena are related to the launch of the iphone 6 which was soon accompanied by news stories about the phone bending under slight pressure or people falling to pranks about charging the phone. These news stories were debunked within a few days but created a significant interest among fans and critics of the phone alike. More seriously, in the Gaza-Isreal conflict a lot of the news that was passed around on social media was

Starbucks capabilities are a combination of innovation, ownership, talented employees, merchandising, image building, and retailing.

2. Today, Starbucks have to leverage its resources and capabilities to achieve growths in the retail sales by expanding consumer base and market opportunities. To start with, Starbucks needs to consider its financial standing which currently does not support rapid expansion. Continuing with joint ventures and relying on their network of distribution and marketing would be a wise decision.

But since Starbucks core business model is dependent on retail outlets and property ownership then it would be prudent to extend its brands through expansion in the brick-and-mortar environment. Starbucks has the option to develop its growth through increased presence in new markets or transfer its technology through franchising. I would suggest that Starbucks take on franchising partly and continue with expansion on its own. For example one main store in a country with franchises in smaller urban settings. This would ensure that increased baristas without expensive investment in human resources, property, marketing, and logistics without losing the essence of its organizational culture, standards, values and business strategy.

Alternatively, if Starbucks continue to expand with its own investment by planting stores in new and emerging markets, in the long term it would have more investment returns and values, but slowdown on achieving strategic objectives.

3. Given the market conditions of the specialty coffee and mushrooming of coffee houses and bars, I would not respond to McDonalds offer. This is because 1) the McDonalds brand is associated with low-price food solutions whereas Starbucks has established itself as high priced specialty coffee distributor and provider of high quality coffee experience. 2) because McDonalds offer means channeling into the basic coffee market whereas Starbucks needs to concentrate on the
