Discussion 9.1: Subjective Evaluation of Isolation

The degree of sound isolation of all materials is very frequency dependent. Spend some time listening to various sounds coming into your home and/or office, and note the character of the sound. Make at least three different observations, and take notes.

Examples might include:

·  the sound of a car passing by, observed through a closed window.

·  the sound of voices or music coming through a wall from an adjacent apartment or office.

Discussion 9.2: Standard Testing Conditions

Transmission loss must be measured in a standardized, controlled laboratory setup. Discuss why this might be so. What variables might be introduced that would affect the results if TL were measured in other environments?
