They were against a political, physical and moral decay in the country. Elections were dominated by bribery and intimidation while the Congress, and the legislature were marred by fraud. The country was in the dark as the media were muzzled. Public opinions were suppressed, and the staffs were paid little for a meaningful living. Land was owned by the capitalists who controlled the job sector for their own benefit. The government at the time also denied workers the right to build a plan to keep them self from abuses and exploitation. The job sector was filtrated with imported workmen who beat down the wages of the citizens. Therefore, the workforce degenerated to European conditions. The gains of the millions American was used to build up fortunes for a few, and in the hand of the Republic control two classes are nurtured in the nation (University of Groningen 2012).

The Populist Party was against the inadequate of the currency. The ability to make money was apportioned to particular bond holders. In addition, national debt has grown to support the legal tender thus increasing the burden to the current and future generation. The leaders of the Populist Party accused the two dominant political parties at the time, the Republic and the Democratic party of abuse of power and plunder. The parties inflicted grievous wrongs upon the people, and they have no intension to change or pledge any review. They accused them of colluding together to break every issue in the coming election but one. The parties proposed to fight the issue of the tariff to ensure that corporations, capitalists, rings, national banks, watered stock, trusts demonize the use of silver so that the oppressions by those who use it are lost out of sight. The parties also proposed to sacrifice lives, children and homes in order to maintain extortion money from the wealthiest capitalists (University of Groningen 2012). The demise of the Populist Party started when they turned to socialism. Their success was doomed from the beginning. The ideas of egalitarianism did not go well in a society rooted in capitalism, and their fascination of free silver was rejected by the urban workers who had a significant voting bloc. The farmers were the holdback followers of the Populist Party which lacked the maturity numbers needed to win an election (University of Groningen 2012). The aim of the Populist Party was to restore political, moral and physical poverty that the people had gone through the hands of the Republic and Democratic Party. The Populist Party passed various resolutions in Omaha, Nebraska conventions to help them in the policies of the party. They resolved to free and fair elections and guarantee to establish legal voter with no Federal government involvement. The adoption of the States of Australian system was to be adopted. They proposed a graduated income tax to lessen the burden of taxation from the local industries. They also resolved to promote legal pensions to sailors and ex-Union soldiers. Moreover, they condemned the accessibly of the ports to pauper and unemployed people from other part of the world so as to protect the wages and they also denounced unsuccessful contract laws that governed the job force. The Populist Party also resolved to agree with the organized working men in reducing the working hours to eight in a day. The party rejected the continuation of mercenaries in the pretext of an army while it only denies people their liberties.
