The Campbell Soup Company acquired Bolthouse Farms for $1.55B in 2012. Bolthouse Farms owned and operated extensive farming operations that supplied Campbell Soup. Suppose that this vertical integration allowed Campbell Soup to save $10M in search and negotiation costs on acquiring $75M per year worth of produce from Bolthouse. Yet, an acquisition poses a one-time payment to cover lawyers, relocation, severance, etc… If that one-time payment was $50M and Campbell applies a discount rate of 5% per year, then what is the present value of Campbell’s gain from the acquisition?
