Pharmacological management has however been proven to be rather ineffective in managing sleep problems that arise from Dementia and may have detrimental health effects on the afflicted persons. Light therapy is increasingly being seen as a promising alternative treatment for managing Alzheimer’s-related sleep problems. The hypothesis is that timed light exposure can synchronize a disorganized circadian sleep rhythm. Disrupted sleep rhythm will result in increased sleep, decreased levels of daytime sleepiness and stress and improvements in general function (Montgomery and Dennis, 2004. Nowak and Davis, 2011).

The purpose of this proposal is to develop a Light Intervention Care (LIC) program that seeks to reduce sleep behavioral problems in Alzheimer’s patients and thus improve the general mental health. The program also aims to reduce stress and depression among family caregivers and home caregivers who are involved in taking care of Alzheimer’s patients. This program will reduce the burden on caregivers resulting in better care for Alzheimer’s patients and positive impact on the lives of all involved.
