HUMN 351 Week Two: Creation Myths

     Nine Types of Cosmogonic Myth

When people think of “myths” they often have in mind stories about the creation of the world. These are called cosmogonic myths from the Greek word cosmogonía where cosmo(s) is world, cosmos, universe and gón(os) is creation, genesis, production. Among the Learning Resources for Week Two are cosmogonic myths from these traditions: Norse, Greek, Egyptian, Babylonian, Abrahamic (from the biblical book of Genesis), Maori, Cherokee, Blackfoot, and Yoruba. 

In this week’s discussion you should choose FOUR of the cosmogonic myths found in your Week Two Learning Resources, and identify the category to which each belongs, according to Marta Weigle’s typology of creation myths. Weigle’s nine types are described in the Learning Resource called “Types of Creation Myths.” They are: (1) Accretion / Conjunction, (2) Secretion, (3) Sacrifice, (4) Division / Consummation, (5) Earth-diver, (6) Emergence, (7) Two Creators, (8) Deus faber (God the maker), and (9) Ex nihilo (Out of Nothing).

For each of the four creation myths, do the following: Name which of Weigle’s mythic types you are discussing, provide a brief summary of the aspect of the myth that illustrates the type, and make clear why you have identified the myth as belonging to that type.

Clearly label and explain your answers. Then respond to the postings of two other students. You key post should be between 300-400 words long. Each of your two responses should be between 150-200 words long. Initial posts are due by Thursday at 11:30 PM ET (Eastern Standard Time in the USA), and the two substantial responses to fellow classmates are due by the end of the week before the discussion locks on Sunday by 11:30 PM ET.
