They recently discovered an earth-like planet at our nearest star. Assume this planet has heavier gravity than earth. Think about what you know about how bone forms, and how it is shaped. Will people living on this planet have heavier bones? Lighter bones? What will their osteons look like? Will certain joints be more or less likely to have trouble? Make sure you explain the reasoning behind your opinion.

Assume there is a child with a genetic mutation in which the muscles in her right arm act like smooth muscle. How would this be expressed in how she controlled her muscles? “Why do we compare our p-value to 0.05? Where did this value come from?”

There are a few stories out there about where this threshold value may have come from, but suffice it to say, it’s not set in stone. In this discussion board, you’ll complete a short activity to investigate the significance level and talk about what you’ve learned.

Step 1: Why 0.05?

Head to openintro.org/why05. (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and watch the first video. This video will tell you about the significance level, and where that threshold comes from. 

After the video ends, you’ll be shown 15 random scatterplots. For each scatterplot, decide whether or not there is a clear, upward trend (positive association). Once you finish, your natural threshold for the significance level will be calculated. Take a screenshot of your results (your name must be somewhere in the screenshot), and post

it in your reply. Here’s an example from when I tried this.

Step 2: How does your natural threshold compare to your classmates?

Once you’ve posted your results, compare your natural threshold to your classmates. Post a response on at least two other student’s submissions – how did your answers compare to theirs? Did you have similar natural thresholds, or were they vastly different? Did you tend to have a high natural threshold, low natural threshold, or were you right near 0.05?
