The essay “Alice Walker: A Voice of the Oppressed” talks about Alice Walker, the voice of African Americans always engaged in a struggle to assert their identity and oppose the forces that tried to oppress them. African American experience is the name of a different living, with different ideals and aspirations.The Color purple depicts the story of a woman who underwent a constant violence and oppression at the hands of her father and then her so called husband. She gave vent to her feelings in letters and imagined having established a relationship with God through her letters. Raped and abused by her father, and then left to the victimization of another man Celie becomes the symbol of the opposed black woman. But that girl bears all this and fires her way in this world in a successful way. Alice’s use of the epistolary form is quite appropriate as she seems to assert that expressing one’s feeling is perhaps the true sign of asserting self–identiy. She becomes the voice of Afro-American woman and gives them the message that oppression should be challenged. We see that Sofia had to face the consequence of her self-assertion when she refused to be the maid. We see the counterpart of otherwise silent victim Celie. The relationship between Celie and Shug is an escape from the oppression of males. This is a refuge for the protagonist and she wallows in this relationship. This friendship seems to indicate that solidarity which victims show when faced with a male oppression.
