Read Chapter 4 of the textbook.

Create a 2 to 3 minute Self-introduction Speech (based on an object) that informs your audience of some aspect of you as a person, and is delivered extemporaneously from brief notes (see definition on p. 242) on 4 x 6 index cards. Use eye contact as much as possible.

Select an object (other than a book or photo) that represents something important about your background, personality, values, ambitions, goals, etc. Then develop your speech by explaining how the object relates to your life.  For example, if your passion is tennis, bring a racket and tell why the sport is so important to you. Or you might bring a diaper as a way to discuss your life as a new dad.  If you want to become a journalist, bring a magazine to represent your career goals. Be as creative as you like here, remembering that the point of the speech is not to focus on the object but to use it as a means for your audience to learn something interesting about you.

To ensure that you achieve maximum points for the speech, thoroughly attend to the following:

Decide what aspect of your life you want to highlight and locate an object that illustrates it.

Study Chapter 4 “Organizing the Speech” on pp. 66-67.

Understand “speaking extemporaneously” and write out your 4 x 6 note cards (p. 68).

Practice, practice, practice out loud (in front of a mirror, to a friend or family member) until your speech flows well, is the right length, and you are feeling confident.

Review the “Presenting the Speech” section on p. 70-71.

Display your object where it can be clearly seen or hold it up at an appropriate time in your speech.

This discussion thread is designed to help you see how a synthesis of sources essay, or literature review, is organized.

Please download the article, “Beyond Frequency: Perceived Realism and the CSI Effect,” by Evelyn Maeder and Richard Corbett.  The article is available in the e-reserves of your class.

On pages 84-85, the authors provide an introduction to the research study they conducted.   You can read this section if you would like to.  However, for this discussion thread, please read from page 85 “(“The CSI effect defined”) to page 94 (up to the section entitled “Method”).

Then answer the following questions:

1. In the first section (“The CSI effect defined”), do the authors ever give you their opinion on the CSI effect?  How do they support their definition and their expansion on the definition?  How many different sources do they cite in this section?

2. From pages 86-88, the authors discuss lawyers, police officers, judges, and community members.  In this section, do the authors ever give you their opinion on any of the issues discussed?

3.  Examine the section entitled “Verdicts” (pp. 90-92).  How do the results from the study by Shelton et al. differ from the results of the study by Kim, Barak, and Shelton?   How do the results of the study by Baskin and Sommers differ from the results of other studies?

4. As a result of having read this article, please write a few sentences about what you might have learned about a) synthesizing sources or b) the CSI effect.

Hello, I am looking for someone to write an essay on Sears Auto Center Scandal. It needs to be at least 750 words.

This forced the administrators to begin to apply massive expense cuts throughout the company.

&nbsp. Many of the expense cuts directly impacted how work was performed by the auto service center at Sears locations. The salesmen and auto mechanics received a decrease in fixed wages and were instead offered a commission-based wage system that provided additional payment for specific types of parts sold and installed, as well as demanding a specific amount of these parts sold during a working shift. Employees began to concentrate on ways to make the most money instead of concentrating on the best quality for the customer. As consumers began to file formal complaints, a California audit and inspection was performed on Sears chains to discern the work involved. It was determined by government officials that the quality of work was below approved standards and the company’s employees were purposely misleading the consumers.

&nbsp. While the CEO of Sears issued statements contradicting these inspections results, the company issued changes in wage programs and earnings for the salespersons at Sears but did not change the commissions-system for auto mechanics. Chuck Fabbri, a Sears auto mechanic, wrote a letter to the U.S. Senate telling the truth about Sears’ wages program for auto mechanics and the dangers that it creates for consumers. These actions were performed by upper-level management at Sears to increase overall profits for the company as well as to provide increased earnings to company shareholders. The community was negatively impacted by these decisions because consumers were taken advantage of and misled. The government placed a 3-year probation on Sears and the company settled on nation-wide class-action cases amounting to multi-billion dollars worth.
