In addition, she witnessed firsthand the death of her relatives when they were attacked by the Native Americans. It was so devastating to her as she too lost her youngest child in the ordeal after being shot. Since Mary Rowlandson suffered losses that she did not deserve, she might be the most sympathetic as she too experienced the cruelty of mankind.

In regard to Sarah Cloyce’s story, John Smith would be the least sympathetic for her situation. In being an explorer and a soldier, smith managed to slay many enemies. John Smith during his lifetime, moreso dedicated it in fighting wars and trying to free his people from oppressive rule. Complete 2 page APA formatted essay: Create 2 pages handout of criteria to ensure that information found on the internet is accurate and reliable. the task is to boil down how to assess reputable websites and translate that knowledge into a form usable by patient.

For the purpose of this paper the source that will be evaluated as a suspect website will be NaturalNews.com (2011) and the source of information that will be considered a reliable source of accurate information will be the Health Canada: Drugs and Health Products Website (2011). Most of the criteria used to evaluate the websites will be based on the University of Colorado: Library Resources on how to evaluate the validity of a website (2011)

In regards to why Natural News can be considered a suspect website can be broken down into several reasons. Firstly it is the case that most articles are written in a opinionated style, for example articles will often try to place blame on an individual or organization rather than the illness itself. Secondly the language being used often incorporates, pseudo-scientific words and phrases such as karma, secret conspiracy etc. Upon examination of the website any reader will notice that there are a whole host of so called natural medicines being sold. Although it is not necessarily a bad thing for a website to utilize advertising, it is the case that the articles seem to tie into products that are being sold on the article in question. Most articles on natural news incorporate links to other websites although the links typically bring the reader to other pages on Natural News and other sites such as Wikipedia (Which typically is not acceptable material for academic works). Finally, articles are not typically being written by professionals such as medical doctors, scientific researchers, nurses etc. Moreover the articles do not seem to be peer reviewed by these sorts of professionals as well.

An example of a good website that may be of some use to anybody interested in nursing would be the Health Canada: Drugs and Health Products Website (2011). Upon early examination one notices that the website does not feature any advertising of any kind which means that there is no direct financial incentive for the existence of the

Gloria has recently graduated college and started a new job. Her coworkers seem very nice, and Gloria has gotten to know Lakeisha and Reggie the best.

Reggie is a friendly older man who often talks about his plans for retirement in five years. He likes to make people laugh but often jokes about his struggles to learn new programs and technology.

Gloria and Lakeisha have been assigned to work on a project together. Lakeisha is very organized and has prepared a list of to-do items along with due dates. She even color-coded the list to indicate which partner will do each item. Gloria, who is more laid-back, feels a bit uncomfortable with this micromanaging from Lakeisha, who has only been at the job a few months longer than she has. Gloria wonders if Lakeisha thinks she is either lazy or stupid, and she does not look forward to working on this project. In the past, Gloria attempted to communicate her feelings with a co-worker; however, her coworker told Gloria that she needed to put her feelings aside and just do the work assigned to her.  As Gloria ponders having a conversation with Lakeisha, she starts to feel overwhelmed and thinks she might have to ask to be removed from this project.

Still, she and Lakeisha have connected because they are both single mothers of teenagers. Gloria confides in Lakeisha about her 16-year-old son who has started making poor choices and is currently grounded for sneaking out of the house and getting drunk at a party the night before a big exam.

The company recently informed the team that there will be a compliance test on new safety policies, which employees will need to pass in order to keep their jobs. The company has provided materials to study as well as optional practice exams. Gloria and Lakeisha have signed up to take the first practice test. Reggie, however, jokes that he will probably wait until the night before the test to read the material. As the date of the test approaches, Reggie becomes increasingly nervous. He makes frequent comments about how hard it is for him to learn a different way of doing the jobs that he has been doing for years, joking that “you can’t teach an old man new tricks.”

1. Gloria’s son is making poor decisions. Given what you have learned about a) brain development and b) social development in Chapter 3:

Explain why Gloria’s son is making those poor decisions.

Discuss specific strategies Gloria can implement to help her son make better choices.

Use specific concepts related to development and self-regulation to explain why these strategies would be effective.

2. Reggie is demonstrating a fixed mindset. How is Reggie’s mindset affecting the way he prepares for the new compliance test?

Use brain plasticity (neuroplasticity) to explain how Reggie can start to develop a growth mindset.

Suggest study strategies for Reggie so that he will be prepared for the compliance test. Use specific concepts from Chapter 4 to explain why these strategies will be effective.

3. Consider Gloria and Lakeisha’s different approaches to the project. On which of the Big 5 personality traits do they most differ?

Give advice to Gloria on how she can use emotional regulation and cognitive reappraisal to work with Lakeisha.

Please provide a 3-4 sentence response to the below discussion question response with in-text citations and references. No title page needed. Original question also below.

Response:

Critical appraisal is the process of evaluating a study to determine its validity, reliability, and applicability to clinical practice (Mazurek Melnyk & Fineout-Overholt, 2019). It is important to understand how to appraise quantitative studies to assess whether the study’s research question methods and results are sufficiently valid to produce useful information (Jack et al., 2010). Validity, reliability, and applicability are all important to consider. For a quantitative study, validity is the extent to which a concept is accurately measured (Heale & Twycross, 2015). There are three types of validity. Content validity refers to whether the instrument adequately covers all the content that it should with respect to the variable (Heale & Twycross, 2015). Face validity is a subset of content validity, and it pertains to experts giving an opinion about whether an instrument measures the concept that it is intended to measure (Heale & Twycross, 2015). Construct validity refers to whether inferences can be drawn about test scores related to the concept being studied (Heale & Twycross, 2015). Reliability for a quantitative study refers to the accuracy of the research instrument (Heale & Twycross, 2015). It relates to consistency of a measure, or if the instrument can be used over and over with the same responses each time (Heale & Twycross, 2015). Finally, applicability to practice is when the findings of the study can fit into contexts outside the study situation and be utilized by researchers and clinicians (Jack et al., 2010). Validity, reliability, and applicability to practice are all important factors to consider when appraising quantitative studies, and arguments can be made that each is the most important measure. Validity is arguably the most important factor to assess because if the measurement instrument is not valid, it does not have to be reliable because it should not be utilized, and if it is not valid, the results should not be applied to practice.

Original Question:

What factors must be assessed when critically appraising quantitative studies (e.g., validity, reliability, and applicability)? Which is the most important? Why?
