Assignment 3: Field Analysis

Purpose

The purpose of this assignment is to recognize sociological concepts at play in your lived experience.   Keeping a field log of your social and institutional experiences for one day, you will critically discuss how your daily life is shaped and constrained by society. This will allow you engage with many of the sociological concepts learned in class.

Writing expectations

The paper should be 4-6 typed pages, double-spaced, 12-point font, with 1″ margins.  Remember to use APA format to cite and reference your sources.

A presentation that offers additional assistance in completing the assignment is available at https://prezi.com/view/DTakPcZ9NlkobNn93EMi/

Instructions

1) Observation

Create a field log (example).  For one day, observe and record the key interactions and institutions in your lived experience.   Starting with waking up, who is the first person you talk to?  What do you do next- take family members to school, go to the gym, go to work and interact with coworkers?  Throughout the day you will take on different roles by interacting with different people and in different situations, and be in contact with different social institutions (education, government, health, etc). Type or photograph your field log and submit it with your written Assignment.

2) Application

Try to wait one or more days before starting this step.  Revisit your field log and apply sociological analysis to your observations.

·         Describe how our day is shaped and constrained by social norms.

·         Analyze how at least four sociological concepts learned in class (eg. roles, institutions, interactions, impression management, stage theory, emotional labor) apply to your field log observations.  This part of the paper should not be focused on the general social norms you described earlier, dig in with specific concepts in this from our text (refrain from using dictionaries).

·         For at least two of the concepts, find and incorporate an appropriate source that highlights how sociologists study this concept in everyday society (for example, emotional labor in the restaurant industry).  Not sure what constitutes an appropriate source?  See our Announcement on this in the classroom- tips and a learning module are provided there.  For example, we discussed gender socialization:

o    In an article by Crespi (2011) that studied gender socialization and gender roles within the family, results showed that a cross-gender relationship between fathers and daughters, mothers and sons has emerged as significant in determining traditional and non-traditional gender attitudes. The research suggested that the relationship with the parent of the opposite sex could be a strong factor in reducing stereotyped attitudes regarding gender roles (Crespi, 2011). *Use a different example in your paper, the purpose here is to show your research skills rather than repeat my research skills.*

3)      Reflection

Reflect on your role as a larger part of society (i.e. your motives, instincts, feelings, and/or structural constraints).  Discuss ways other people affected you and the ways you affected others in the social experiences of your day.

Sample Field Log

Below is a brief field log to give you an idea of the social interactions and institutions you might look for in your day.  With the observations are sample course concepts that relate to the observations.  Be creative in exploring and applying concepts- we will all apply concepts differently even if the scenes we observe are very similar.

Discuss why it is (or is not) important to include end users in the process of creating the contingency plan?

Harvard Business School is a non-profit organization which helps the elite students to excel in both management and business world. Because end users are the ones who get affected by the market risks, disasters, floods or the companies who are running out of businesses. Harvard Business School believes that the end users must be involved in the contingency plans because it is for them.

By the definition itself a contingency is anything which occurs beyond the ordinary things. So, I think it is important to involve the end users to get an idea of how to operate in such abnormal situations.

Contingencies normally affect the companies way beyond than expected, they can even disrupt the entire business. No matter how much we plan for it, it is not going to as expected. Reality is often disappointing.

End users help in preparing for the planning and execution. They also help in realizing any missing security measures or lack of resources.

What are the possible pitfalls of end user inclusion?

I can’t think of many but always remember as I said reality is often disappointing. Not matter how much we plan it is hard to keep things under control when reality hits us. So, definitely, we must also take pitfalls into an account.

On one side involving users is a good thing and also a bad thing. Because contingencies happen rarely, involving users too much into the process might makes them suspicious. And also, users tend to not execute the plan well both in practice and in real event. Often people perform less in a practice session thinking that this is just a practice session. This affects them during the real event.

It is almost impossible to have resources covered for all aspects in the event of disaster. During the contingency we might think it is adequate but during the real event that may not adequate.

For example, when you shutdown your Mac book (PC) accidentally, it recovers all the data because it had a backup or a snapshot of your work just before the shutdown. This mechanism in Mac book, probably came from the contingency plan.

Discussion

Contingency is a future event or incident that might possibly occur but it is unpredictable. Contingency plan is a plan designed for unpredictable events, which are not part of regular plan of task or a project. Contingency planning is part of risk management plan that a company employs to avoid the catastrophe.  “Effective management of disruptions is critical to an organization’s ability to weather disruptive events and remain competitive. Contingency planning is a method of risk management that promotes effective crisis management.” (Hall, Skipper, Hazen, Hanna, 2012, p. 1 para. 1). Contingency plan can be successfully designed only when you are aware of the risk that is possibly can occur or the understanding of different aspects of the projects or programs so that branch out the possible occurrences of the issues based on the experienced executives. “Risk assessment is the widely accepted process used to understand, quantify, and document the effects of undesirable events on organizational objectives so that risk management, continuity of operations planning, and contingency planning can be performed.” (Grimaila, Badiru, 2013, p. 1 para. 1).

According to financial statement, contingencies are the cliffhanger and act as a liability. It cannot be quantified in numbers since it is not a known occurrence, it is just an expected plan assuming that problem or the risk might occur. Having contingency plan allows individual or a company to have plan to avoid disaster without which could be the end of an organization’s existence. With contingency plan, you can analysis the possible impact of the problem or risk on the business. Test the contingency plan; this is where end user comes into picture. End user are the primary source of victim who are targeted first. Therefore, if they are included in the plan and they are aware of what needs to be done; half the plan is already successful. This inclusion of end user might increase cost, it might become difficult in controlling the data flow and prevent the data form sharing this producing narrow and inflexible systems.

Create a 5 page essay paper that discusses Good Night, and good luck Chuck.

Times in America must have been hard at the time. America had an enemy within that was causing the people a lot of fear. Everyone suspected the person next to them of being the enemy. People suspected of being communists had to bear serious charges. sometimes courts need no evidence to declare suspects guilty. Some people made false charges of others that were used to bring them down. This movie takes the viewer back to the times a cold war existed between America and the Soviet Union, when every American was afraid they would lose to the soviet nation.

According to ideas brought about in the movie, the news media has a great responsibility of informing and entertaining the people. As shown in the film, making responsible decisions on what to present or leave out in media stations is not an easy task. Such decisions are subject to criticism by those in power and journalists may suffer serious consequences if they mess up with those thought to be unbeatable in society. the high and mighty. However, one of the journalists and his producer clearly point out that despite the risks involved, journalists should focus on giving the people reliable information. The media should assume responsibility in its endeavors and expose the realities kept in the dark. The media should not lose integrity in fear of politicians who are selfish. Due to their selfish interests, the high and mighty in society always wants to control everything aired on media stations. The media should have the interests of the common citizen at heart. This movie suggests that media should participate actively in exposing the flaws in society. Media should offer more to the people and not just entertainment. Some journalists in this movie are an example worth emulating. they hosted a show that was able to expose the injustices committed in society.

Evident in the movie, the media was very
