Write a 2 page essay on The Namesake, Informal letter.

After his death, I decided to live with my mother and sister because they were the only family I had at that point (Lahiri 56). It still pains me to tell you how sorry I am based on my unjust behavior towards you.

There are various issues I would like to tell you my friend pertaining the reasoning that made me go through what I believed at that time was right. There is the issue of culture and that my parents were always against me marrying someone from another culture. My parents were concerned with my affairs and eventually poisoned my mind to an extent that made me marry a Bengali girl by the name of Moushumi. She was my childhood friend and my family had become fond of her.

Another issue that has been disturbing me in relation to my cultural identity. My parents are Bengali but seeing what they did to my name made me angry. Nikhil was initially my name but, I was registered under the name Gogol in school because my father loved the name from Nicolai Gogol books (Lahiri 33). After my father died, it hit me hard because of cultural differences whereby, our culture always wants closeness of the family. Therefore, I was forced to marry this Bengali girl in order to please my mother.

I did a lot of crazy things including drugs and partying, forgetting that it was an acquired way of life. I am still attracted to you and your way of life. The relaxed way of life in America is so much appealing to most individuals as compared with the strict rules from the Bengali culture, but, damaging in the long run. I was so anxious about my Bengali culture until it affected my relationship with my schoolmates. In most cases, I was always waiting for people to make stereotypical comments about my culture, instead of being grateful to what life offered me (Lahiri 70).

Finally, my dear, it has come to my mind that I was all along wrong in my actions and I am apologetic for that. I greatly believe that we were meant to be together forever and I am

Question 1

Harry is an accountant who worked for a mid-tier accounting firm in Brisbane. In early 2017 his wife, Sally, got a job offer to work for a Canadian software company for four years. Harry and Sally decided that this career opportunity for Sally was too good to miss, and they would move with their two children to Toronto, Canada for four years so that Sally could take up the offer. They sold their house and put their furniture into storage. Harry resigned from his job and in May 2017 he moved to Toronto with Sally and their children aged 2 and 8 years. Prior to moving to Canada, none of the family had ever been overseas before. The family intends to stay in Canada for four years, although they might travel back to Australia in 2018 for a short holiday to visit friends and family. Upon arrival in Toronto they immediately rented a house to live in. Their 8 year old daughter was enrolled in a local school, and it was decided that Harry would not work in Canada so that he could look after their 2 year old son. Harry opened up a bank account in Canada to deposit his savings into.

Harry received the following receipts (all amounts are in Australian dollars):

(i)           A cheque for $1,900 on 14 August 2017 from his former Australian employer for unpaid salary due to him.

(ii)          A royalty cheque for $10,000 on 31 January 2018 in relation to an industrial property (a Western Australian coal mine) that he has an interest in. Harry has notified the mine of his change of address.

(iii)         $100 interest paid by the Bank of Canada into his savings account with them on 31 March 2018.

(iv)         $600 interest paid by Commonwealth Bank of Australia from a 2 year term deposit. Harry had initially deposited the money on 4 August 2016 and the term deposit matured on 4 August 2018.

(v)          A $500 unfranked dividend from Blue Mine Ltd, an Australian mining company which was deposited into his Bank of Canada account on 22 October 2017. The dividend is paid out of accumulated company profits that Blue Mine Ltd earnt back early in the 2015 year.

Required:

(1)      Determine the tax consequences for Harry in respect of these receipts for the 2018 tax year.

Hint: you should consider whether any of the receipts are income, and if so, when they have been derived in order to work out what Harry’s Australian tax consequences will be – there are 4 issues that you need to work through to arrive at a conclusion. The framework and application for the first issue is set out below to get you started. This is quite an involved problem, so please ensure that you work through all of the issues before attending your seminar.

(2)       Consider whether your answer in (1) would change if Harry had to return to Australia for two weeks in November 2017 to be with his mother before she passed away.

Sub issue (1):        Are any of the receipts a type of assessable income?

[Consider the material from Seminar #1 and #2]

The historical probability P(X) that the interested prospective members would join is below.

  • 0 join: 0.1
  • 1 join: 0.2
  • 2 join: 0.4
  • 3 join: 0.2

I need some assistance with these assignment. various communities inhabited the region in new york city Thank you in advance for the help! In New York City, various communities inhabit the region. however, Indian community that is famously known as Desi is the most unique of all of them. They are believed to be the native long distance traders from India. they have lived in New York since the beginning of 20th century. By the time they arrived in New York City, the Indians were long distance traders who brought commodities from Asian continents to European countries and America. With time, they settled down and established themselves in retail business. (Jolly 2007).

The modern Desi Indian community is assimilated with the modernity where most of them are no longer business individuals but has embraced other professions such as film industries, education sector, hotel, and restaurant industries among the rest. However, they have preserved their culture that makes them to be highly social beings. Every year, they engage in religious ceremony as a way of appeasing their ancestors. This ceremony last for a whole month where they dedicate their lives to the gods whom they believe to be behind their prosperity. In addition, the community also appreciates marriages where the parents identifies a partner for their children at a tender age and organizes for marriage (Jolly 2007).

A striking fact about this community is that in most cases they attend Indian restaurants, attends every Indian social event, and buys items from local grocery stores as well as watching Indian movies at the theaters. Desi community believes in unity and love for one another. They consider the members of their communities as brothers and sisters. Therefore, the culture dictates that no Desi individual should oppress another but should offer assisted to the distressed ones. By doing this, they believe that they are appeasing their ancestors in return for their blessings. Therefore, it is responsibility of every individual to be kind to one another in order to appease the ancestors (Jolly 2007).

According to the Indian people, it is the responsibility of the community to provide food, good health, and security to every individual. In particularly, every good thing that happens in the community is because of the interventions of the ancestors. Consequently, the Desi people believe that their existence is because of the mercies of their ancestor. In conclusion, as a member of this community, to be socially responsible means that, you must be responsible for the wellbeing of one another and the community at large.
