You are in charge of study the tobacco industry and its effects on the society wellbeing. To tackle that, the team of environmental economists (you included, of course) decided to approach this with the theory of externalities, (Recall, tobacco is a good that provokes a negative externality in society) and divide the project in 2 steps:

Step 1: The first step is to find the market equilibrium of the industry so a competitive equilibrium is found using the following functions:

Demand = Marginal Private Benefit (MPB) = 30 – 0.5Q

Supply = Marginal Private Cost = -1.5 + 0.4Q

Step 2: Through the team’s research and literature, you have found that the negative externality of smoking to society accounts for 60% of the total amount (quantity) of cigarettes in the market (Marginal External Cost (MEC) = 0.6Q).

At competitive equilibrium, Marginal Private Benefit (MPB) = Marginal Private Cost (MPC) or Supply = Demand

1: Find the competitive equilibrium Quantity and Price.

At efficient equilibrium Marginal Social Benefit (MSB) = Marginal Social Cost (MSC)

2: Find the efficient equilibrium.

Recall (MSC=MEC+MPC), we are assuming the Marginal External Benefits are nonexistent (MEB=0)

3: Contrast the market conditions in both cases. For example, including externalities does the supply increase or decrease? Do prices go up or down? Please be specific and show all your work.

Use a word processor (such as MS Word) to revise the following sentences so that the subject and verb of each sentence identify key actors and actions. The dedication of professors to multiculturalism is crucial to encouraging students of all races to succeed. Currently, the percentage of full-time African-American professors teaching in American universities is less than eight. A challenge to the traditional “white” canon of literature was brought about by minority professors from across the nation. In a democratic society, it is nearly impossible for professors to separate education from politics. The idea of equal opportunity in education is supported by most Americans. In the 1980s, there was a marked decline in the number of African-American students enrolled in four-year universities. During the recession, many federal scholarships for minorities were cut by politicians trying to balance the national budget. Writing about how race is portrayed in literature is a way that critics explore the problems of racism. Falling into the trap of the white Western tradition was a risk African-Americans who wrote about “black” issues within the terms of “white” language took. In the book Loose Canons, the arguments of Henry Louis Gates Jr., a professor at Harvard University, work to uncover common assumptions about racism in literature.

Create a new Minitab database in which you will be able to enter the following variables:

  • Subject identification (ID) number
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Height
  • Year in college

Name each variable and identify the type as either numeric or alphanumeric (text). Categorical data (nominal or ordinal) should be entered as alphanumeric, and continuous data (interval or ratio) should be entered as numeric.

Create the following data about forty hypothetical students who are undergraduates in college, making sure you have five males and five females in each year (freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior):

  • Subject ID number (You will be required to provide this yourself. For example, subject 1 is 01; subject 2 is 02, and so forth. This should be identified as alphanumeric in your database since it is categorical.)
  • Age
  • Sex
  • Height (convert to inches; 5 feet 3 inches = [12 * 5] + 3 = 63)
  • Year in college (freshman, sophomore, junior, or senior)

Enter the complete dataset into the Minitab worksheet. Save the worksheet on your hard drive.
